Every five years is reasonable, unless you live next to a beach then you might have to consider doing it more often. Either way the good thing is that you don't necessarily need to hire a professional, especially if you keep up with the maintenance you can easily do it yourself.

If you leave them for longer periods of time like 15-20 years you are risking damaging the frames. Hardwood windows tend to be more resilient in that regard but even they would rot eventually.

How much does it cost to restore wooden windows?

  • If they are in a good state and maintained regularly, It takes a couple of hours to prepare, and apply 2/3 coats of paint, so it should cost in the region of £80-£100 per window. Depending on the size of the window.

  • If they need some repairs, like a few places where it needs filler replacing some missing putty etc. it takes about half a day to do, so you can expect to pay somewhere in the region of £120/£180 per window.

  • If parts need to be made and replaced due to rotted wood it could easily take a whole day and cost over £300 per window.

And that is why it is important to regularly maintain external joinery as it could prove to be cheaper in the long run!
